SOS light on in the
T-Roc, T-Cross and Kamiq

Three different badges, the same control unit behind the roof console — and sure enough, it is mostly these three that cross our bench. Almost always with the first cold spells: the warning comes and goes for a few weeks, then stays.

Why these three in particular

One family, one fault

Volkswagen's T-Cross and Škoda's Kamiq are built on the same technical base, and the T-Roc is their close cousin — and the control unit of the emergency call system is the same family across all three. When the warning appears on the dashboard — the full form is «Error: Emergency call function. Please visit workshop.» — the system has failed the self-check it repeats at every start-up.

The calendar is no accident: reports spike in autumn. Cold and damp wake the defect, and that is why the warning at first comes and goes — it appears after a cold night or a storm, disappears when it turns milder, then returns. The full story of the message, of the reset that is not enough and of the warranty is in the emergency call guide: here we keep to what concerns these three models.

The detail nobody writes down

The car wash, the roof and the antenna

In the owners' clubs the same story keeps coming round: SOS light on after a jet wash, or after weeks of rain. It is not imagination. The control unit lives up high, right against the headlining, and its antenna connection runs through the roof: moisture working its way in and corrosion on the connector are among the real causes we find when we open the modules up — together with internal faults on the board.

It is also why DIY does not get you far: from the outside there is no telling an oxidised connector from a fault on the board, and the serious answer comes from the bench, with the module opened up and powered. That is exactly why our diagnosis is free: first we look, then we talk about cost.

What to do

The real routes are two

The second-hand control unit bought online is not an option: inside it is the eSIM with the original vehicle's data, and the manufacturer does not approve moving it to another car. That leaves a new part with coding at the main dealer — priced by brand and model, rarely cheap — or having your own control unit repaired: it costs a fraction, and since the module stays yours, the coding stays with it. It goes back in and the car recognises it as it always has.

In practice: you write to us with the model and the exact message, and we tell you straight away what to expect. Module by courier, free diagnosis, a quote for your brand before any work, and the repair covered for 12 months.

Quick questions

What people ask us

The coming and going is the first stage: as the cold sets in, the warning tends to stay on for good. The right time to have the module checked is now, while it comes and goes — not in January, when it is there to stay.

Yes: the T-Roc, T-Cross and Kamiq carry the same family of eCall control unit, and on the bench the fault we see is the same. Only the car it sits in changes.

At the main dealer the route is a new control unit plus coding; repairing your own costs a fraction, and the quote — for your brand and model, not a flat rate — comes before any work. Free diagnosis and a 12-month warranty.
